Paris vows not to honor ’sect symbol’
Paris snubs Scientology ‘militant’ Cruise
13/07/2005 – 08:55:21 Paris city hall refuses to make Tom Cruise an honorary citizen because he’s a follower of L Ron Hubbard’s controversial Church Of Scientology.
The French capital has slammed the War Of The Worlds star as a “militant” for his devotion to the belief system, which they view as a disturbing cult.
In a debate on Monday, the municipal assembly agreed “never to welcome the actor Tom Cruise, spokesman for Scientology and self-declared militant for this organisation,” and one authority described the actor as a “sect- symbol”.
The 43-year-old screen hunk, who is already an honorary citizen of Marseille, proposed to his girlfriend Katie Holmes at the Eiffel Tower in the romantic capital city earlier last month.
