Police say ‘Devil Dogs’ gang on the rise in Gilbert

White supremacist gangs are active in Gilbert again – three years after the violent teenage Devil Dogs flashed White Power signs in school photos and attacked strangers with their fists – members of the town Human Relations Commission learned from police this week.

Wednesday, Gilbert Police Sgt. Art Johnson told the commission that gang activity has increased dramatically since August and that two White Supremacist groups are now active in the southeastern part of town. Hauptli said Johnson reported that a Hispanic gang is also established in central Gilbert and that police have receive 19 gang-related calls so far this year.

“This shocks me,” said commission member Richard King, a Native American “We thought we had eliminated it, but it looks like things from the past are rearing their ugly heads.”

King said he witnessed what he thought was a large fight after a football game at Mesquite High School Oct. 25. He said police later told him it was a brawl between rival teenage White supremacist gangs.

Tawn Hauptli, who is Black and co-chair of the commission, said she will call a special meeting of the group soon to talk more about the gang problem and consider making recommendations to the Town Council.

Councilman Larry Morrison, said he is also concerned. “Now that gang activities have started to come back, we want to make sure we’re covered, that our police have proper training,” he said.

Wednesday, Gilbert Police Sgt. Johnson declined comment and said a report detailing gang activity would be available late Thursday, However, a records clerk said it would take at least five days to make a copy of that report for The Republic.
