Aum files for end to surveillance

TOKYO — The Aum Shinrikyo religious cult filed a request with the Public Security Examination Commission on Wednesday that it cease to be subject to surveillance, arguing it no longer poses a threat of indiscriminate mass murder.
Chizuo Matsumoto, founder of the cult responsible for a 1995 nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway and other heinous crimes, “wields no power to order indiscriminate mass killings,” the cult said in the request.
