Do you own a Bible?
According to Barna Research, “Almost every household in America (92%) owns at least one copy of the Christian Bible. This includes most homes in which the adults are not practicing Christians as well as the homes of hundreds of thousands of atheists.”
That item also states, that “12% of adults believe that the name of Noah’s wife was Joan of Arc. (The Bible does not provide her name.)”
How much do you know about the Bible? The web site of the International Bible Society includes many useful resources on the Bible, such as a selection of Frequently Asked Questions.
The Bible has been translated into hundreds of languages, and comes in many different versions – ranging from “word for word” or “though for thought” translations to paraphrases. To help you sort out which version is best for you, IBS offers an English Bible Translation Comparison Chart. So does Amazon.com’s BibleFinder.
Gospelcom.net’s popular Bible Gateway provides a number of online Bible versions (as well Bibles is several languages). See also The Unbound Bible.
Why are there so many versions? That question is answered here. While you’re at it, here is help for the terminology used to describe the Bible.
But, ahem, “You Can’t Trust the Gospels. They’re Unreliable.” And what about those alleged Bible contradictions?
Then there are some cults of Christianity, such as the Mormon Church, that make claims about the so-called ‘lost books of the Bible.’
When you are ready for some indepth study you’ll want to use these online Bible Study Tools, including Bibles, commentaries, concordances, dictionaries, etcetera. See this Apologetics Index entry for additional research resources.
Webmasters can add a daily scripture quote to their sites, courtesy of the International Bible Society.
